VoIP, PBX, and SIP Trunking:

These terms meant nothing to me until I got started in the telecommunications industry, and then I realized the tremendous cost savings I could access. Not only do I enjoy these deep discounts for my own business, I love providing the same cost savings and ORGANIZATION to my customers.

Let’s get started.

First things first: Test your internet connection bandwith with this interactive broadband speed test.

Once you’re sure you’re running at a fast enough speed and, importantly, getting what you’re paying for from your provider, consider converting your regular telephone line to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), a suite of hardware and software that uses the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. VoIP systems run via a data network as opposed to a circuit-switched network dedicated purely to telephony.

  • Telephone calls over the Internet do NOT incur the surcharge to which standard telephone lines are subject. These calls are immune from some of the taxes, fees, surcharges, and other fine print you associate with your basic astronomical telephone bills.

If your company HAS already converted to a VoIP System, consider migrating to a cloud-based PBX (Private Branch Exchange). This is a private telephone network within an enterprise that allows users to share a certain number of outside lines for making telephone calls outside the PBX. You do need to upgrade to this, but once you do:

  • PBX is much less expensive than connecting an external telephone line to every single telephone in your company.

  • As an added bonus, it’s easier to make a call via PBX: all you need to dial is 3 or 4 digits.

If your office is small enough, you could consider running exclusively off smartphones, eliminating business phones and the costs associated with them.

Now let’s talk about SIP trunking. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) can be used to send multimedia messages to multiple parties, allowing us to communicate globally with just our cell phones and mobile devices. Unlike PBX Trunks, SIP systems can be difficult to set up and maintain, which is why you need confidence in your business telephone provider; those that have 24 hour support, like KATT Communications, will serve you best on this platform. Unlike similar services, such as PBX trunks, SIP trunks can carry all forms of media including voice, data, and video. SIP:

  • is a great fit for companies with multiple branches or a lot of remote employees who depend heavily on multimedia communications.

  • Costs less- Saves money on your business phone

  • Scales more easily- Makes it easy to scale your operation pain-free

  • Is more reliable- Offers increased phone service reliability

SIP trunking is provided by SIP providers, which are similar to traditional phone companies, except SIP providers give access to phone lines over the internet (and SIP service is significantly less expensive - sometimes as much as 60-80% less).

Summing it all up:

There are some key differences between VoIP and SIP:

  • VoIP is a term that applies to making or receiving phone calls over the internet or internal networks. SIP, on the other hand, is an application layer protocol that is used to establish, modify and terminate multimedia sessions such as VoIP calls.

  • A major difference between VoIP and SIP is their scope. VoIP is not a discrete technology in its own right, but actually a family of technologies used within modern telecommunication networks. SIP is a signaling protocol used within the VoIP umbrella.

  • VoIP sends only voice messages, but SIP can carry all forms of media. SIP trunks send packets via data networks, which may include voice, data, or video content. SIP systems allow users to make voice and video calls online, often for free.

  • While SIP offers a lot more, these trunks can be harder to install and maintain.
